Past perfect simple is used toshow that an action took place once or many times before another point in the past.

Form:

Positive: Subject + had + verb (past participle)
Negative: Subject + had + not + verb (past participle)
Interrogative: Had + subject + verb (past participle)
Keywords: by, before, for, by the time, after, never, ever, already, when, since
